A very humble analysis and report of your performance over the last year. It’s easy to think that professional investors and writers are always right and always successful. But, as you point out, that’s not the case! It’s about being correct and successful more often than not. And reversing that position quickly when things don’t pan out as you expected.
Regarding #OTB,
I’ve just come back from a week in Lanzarote and there were lots of empty seats on the EasyJet flight. The holiday was booked as a package holiday with EasyJet, who seem to be one of the cheapest when Googling a holiday. Although I do like the figures from #OTB.
#CARD,
I did look at the possibility of buying some before Christmas but had a lack of funds. It’s one I like and the US acquisition makes it look even more attractive. Some commentators on Stockopedia have also noticed early in December that they had sent shipping containers to the USA and they were trying to work out what the container weights would equate to in stock?
#BOOM,
I like this one and it’s one of the favourite holdings of the fund manager of ‘Onward Opportunities’ a very successful (last year) fund who also had a good holding of #WNWD and talked very favourably about them on VOX with Paul Hill recently, before they got taken out just last week! +70%
So all in all some good ‘food for thought’ from yourself! Some stocks I will do some more research on.
Hopefully you had a good Christmas and you’ll have a Great and prosperous New Year!
p.s,
How’s the collection going for the local Village Hall?
Thank you and I'm pleased you enjoyed the review. I wouldn't read too much into empty seats on an Easyjet flight, rather like not taking too much notice of going into one store and assuming the whole chain were performing the same. IAG have been o a tear and broker upgrades have been huge. Jet2 were ahead the last time they posted news. It's interesting that OTB are buying shares back at a stonking pace, 20% of the share buy backs already done in under 2 weeks, they will have most of the buy backs done before the Jan trading update at this rate.
CARD is just so highly cash generative but you have to expect, in a seasonal business based heavily on Christmas, that they will likely have very uneven halves and if H2 is going to be big, H2 will have a lot of up front costs. It can almost be however bad H1 looks on the face of it tells you how good H2 will be. They will only get a couple of months out of the Garven acquisition this year but a full year next year so that's a positive going fwd as will be a full year of 1000 Aldi stores unlike only 500 in H1. When you look at the sales growth, earnings growth and cash generation since Darcy took over, and the debt he has paid down he is well worth backing imo.
Onward Opportunities' Laurence Hulse seems a very shrewd guy and seems to have done well. He also likes MPAC which I hold so that I find interesting too.
Regarding the Villager Hall donations, I have had a good number of donations which has raised a good few quid but a bit disappointing the low number of donations considering how many have told me they make a good few bob from researching what I have highlighted. I guess a lot of people like paying nothing when they are not forced to - such is appreciation. That's life I guess.
Have a very healthy and happy New Year and thank you for your feed back.
Thanks for the reply, I tend to agree with your thoughts and still like #CARD, so will be looking at this one next week. I also like #OTB and will have to do some more research as its not been one on my watch list.
On the subject of the village hall, can you send me the link to make a contribution please. I can't find it trying to go back through old posts. I have only been following you since coming across to Substack with Paul Scott, so haven't yet directly invested due to your posts but probably will do in the future. #CARD was one I've been interested in for a while and would probably have already had them if it weren't for lack of funds.
I’ve only just scan read it as we have people coming over 🙄😀 but thanks a million for the amount of effort you’ve put into it. There’s loads to digest.
My only concern is that even though I’m recently back into LIO, their use of language re the divi is slightly concerning….”targeting” maintaining the divi is a bit vague, but I guess if assets under management start to increase then all will be ok.
Anyway many thanks for all the valuable information and wishing you a happy and healthy new year.
Thanks for this CR. Great read. Having made money on #SHOE this year, lost on #CARD and still very long on #GDWN I find your analysis very interesting. Merry Christmas and best of luck for a healthy and successful new year.
Hi Stephen,
I wouldn't read too much into that, I think the director buys says more about what they expect than their words myself.
Have a happy and healthy new year and all the best
Richard
