I've finally finished watching the CMD for M&S. The takeaway for me is very simple, there's an old retail addage that says "retail is detail", that was drummed into me 40 years ago, and M&S is doing a lot in very great detail, which is necessary if they want to stand super to shoulder with Next on clothing and home. We'll have to trust there won't be project overkill. The insurance is that the CFO appears impressive and the Chairman extremely experienced.
I'm not sure M&S will achieve its aspiration for being known for style if the dress sense of the senior management team is anything to go by! I'm frankly sick of seeing people in senior roles who can't look the part. The analysts in the room were better turned out. When I go and indirect the refurbished Handforth foodhall in a couple of weeks I'll be better turned out too.
